Michael W. Smith Raises The Bar Yet Again With Powerful, Personal ‘wonder’ releasing Sept. 28

MICHAEL W. SMITH RAISES THE BAR YET
AGAIN WITH POWERFUL, PERSONAL ‘WONDER’ SEPT. 28

Album’s First Single ‘Save Me From Myself’ At Radio Now; Album Production Represents First Use in Christian Music of Innovative New ‘CLASP’ Technology for Sonic Richness

(NASHVILLE, Tenn.) July 20, 2010 – Ever the creative risk taker and industry innovator, Reunion Records flagship artist Michael W. Smith begins a new decade by delivering the most powerful and personal album of his career, all while living out his faith with the unsurpassed energy and passion that defines him as a man.

With new 12-song project Wonder, Smith struggles with the disparities of life in the modern age: hope and hardship, confusion and confidence, desperation and dedication. Yet, through it all, he emits a musical and lyrical sense of… possibility. Continuously transformed by the impact of his global travels and the inspiration of his non-profit work (Compassion International, RCKTWN teen club, Nashville Rising, etc.), Smith pushes forward with strength and resolve, believing that Love does win in the end. It’s this sense of awe and amazement in the midst of the human condition that most aptly describes Wonder.

You’re everything I can’t explain.
You set my heart on fire.
And here I stand amazed.
You take my breath away (“Take My Breath Away”)

Rather than being whimsical or abstract, Wonder shows the legendary and multi-talented singer/songwriter/producer/composer pursuing life and faith with a genuine sense of curiosity, gratitude and determination. Intent to explore the world and his own heart as deeply as he can, Smith again lays bare his life for his listeners, sharing his thoughts, hopes and emotions on his newest and most compelling collection
of songs.

If my scars could speak
They would say that grace is my only hope
Grace is showing me the way to where
All my shadows disappear and healing waits for me (“Run to You”)

Two songs provide a vulnerable lens into the intimacy of marriage as Smith speaks candidly of his feelings for wife Debbie: “You Belong to Me” tells of his love-at-first-sight encounter while “Forever Yours” reflects his romantic life-pledge. Another cut, “Welcome Home,” delves into both the deep grief of losing Debbie’s grandmother and the unrestrained joy of knowing she’s now arrived where she truly belongs.

Other highlight tracks include the project’s anthemic first single, “Save Me From Myself” (released to radio on 6/25), “Take My Breath Away,” “Leave,” “Run to You” and the prayerful, moving album closer, “Take Me Over.”

Musically, Smith continues his reign as Christian music’s finest innovator. From The Big Picture production values of his early years to sold-out arena tours to the unparalleled passion of his worship albums, Smith has proven time and again his leadership as the true trendsetter of creative vision and musical originality. This time Smith raises the bar even higher, re-teaming with longtime collaborator and producer Bryan Lenox (Freedom, This Is Your Time) to bring forth a rich, sonically expansive record. The production of the 12-song Wonder, Smith’s 22nd career album, featured one of the first uses of Endless Analog’s CLASP system (for Closed Loop Analog Signal Processor), a device giving the producers new flexibility in linking up digital audio workstations with analog tape machines and imbuing Wonder’s final sound with a warmth and depth rarely heard in today’s musical marketplace.

Smith not only boldly engaged with new technology on this latest effort, he also challenged himself by teaming with a new band in the studio and partnering with several new writers (Kyle Lee, Michael Farren, Michael Olson, Stu G – formerly of Delirious? – as well as highly respected names like Matt Maher, Tommy Sims and Matthew West, among others.) to help communicate some of the most stirring and thought-provoking songs of his career.

Of course, his inventive and pioneering studio work aptly reflects the man himself. Never stagnant, ever vigilant, Michael W. Smith lives life to the fullest and approaches his relationship with God with the very same sense of wonder that titles his latest recording. Whether singing before thousands on a worldwide tour, sharing stories and songs on his sold-out Alaskan cruises, performing for sold-out arenas as part of the Hannity Freedom Concerts or volunteering his talents to benefit Nashville’s flood victims, Smith delivers a timeless message with heartfelt candor and conviction.

Wise to the ways of the world and heartbroken at the tragedies he witnesses all around, Michael W. Smith uses songs and stories to remind us all of where to find rest and comfort. With tremendous insight and expectation, Smith’s latest musical endeavor displays a powerful snapshot of the journey we are all on, a journey of Wonder.

A love offering will also be taken for the Bowling Family during the night. “The Gospel music community is a family,” stated Sheri Easter. “When one of our own falls, we all want to come together to lift them up. Jeff and I know they would do the same for us and we are honored to be a part of this special night.”

Jason Crabb continued, “Everyone knows that Mike, Kelly and Terah are my family, but this is a ministry that needs our help. We want everyone to come and lift up their needs with us. We will pray, sing and watch the Heavens open up.”

On July 1st, the Bowling Family was involved in a horrible bus accident just outside of Charlotte, NC. Everyone was taken to a nearby hospital, with Mike being life flighted from the scene. Although there are many broken bones, bumps and bruises, everyone on the bus is expected to make a full recovery. Doctors have explained to them that the road to recovery is long. Mike has a fractured skull and multiple injuries to his face, along with a broken wrist. Kelly has a broken vertebrae and foot. She is confined to a hospital bed and body brace for several months and surgery is still questionable. Terah has an injured arm and is in pain, but overall is well. Katelanne, Mike and Kelly’s six-year-old daughter, has a broken collar bone. She has already had plastic surgery to repair a deep laceration on her face. The entire Bowling Family feels extremely blessed to be alive. They will not be released from doctors care to resume their road schedule for several months depending on their progress. Proceeds from the concert will provide relief for the family during this time.

Update on the Bowlings

From Kelly Bowling’s Facebook page:

Katelanne’s DR looked at her clavicle today and said that it may always protrude, but because her range of motion is so good, it doesn’t look like she’ll need surgery. Mom said he looked at Katelanne and smiled like he was amazed. I love it when we are amazed, then we know who to give the glory to!

Yes we do, Kelly :o .  We give God the glory during your recovery time.

Joni Eareckson Tada update

Joni Eareckson Tada provides an update:

Friend, I may be dealing with cancer, but I’m still singing!

In fact, there’s nothing like a little hymn-harmonizing with friends to make my spirits soar during this battle against breast cancer — that’s what happened when several friends came over last weekend to drop off a couple of meals (I’m pretty much healed up after surgery, but having friends make meals has been such a help). Well, during the visit we started singing – soon we were belting out “In Christ alone, my hope is found; he is my rock, my strength, my song!” During our impromptu hymn-sing, we started talking about the irony of such happy hymn-singing in the face of such an overwhelming threat as breast cancer. But you know, as I told my friends, the Bible underscores how important it is to sing during times of adversity.

I mean, look at Jesus. The one and only scriptural account of our Savior singing was on the night He was led away to His death – it was when He and His disciples were in the Upper Room. The Bible says after they sang a hymn, they went down to the Garden of Gethsemane. And then there’s that account of Paul and Silas singing hymns when they were in prison. So for me – well, for any Christian – harmonizing while facing hardship is the biblical thing to do. So, singing, for me, has become a prescription for healing.  And not just harmonizing with friends or singing ‘in my head’ in the middle of the night — late in the day on Monday, Ken and I remarked that the backyard birds have never sounded sweeter. I wondered if they might be messengers of Zephaniah 3:17 for “[The Lord] will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing.” Funny how a thing like cancer can make you treasure every snippet of God’s smallest blessings.

Also, this past weekend, I enjoyed a visit from my quadriplegic friend, Vicky Olivas, who underwent surgery for cancer several years ago. Just seeing her sitting in her wheelchair with her bright smile and happy spirit was such an encouragement – my friend is a true example that although “outwardly we may be wasting away, inwardly we are being renewed day-by-day.” Hearing Vicky’s testimony of surviving surgery and a challenging recovery was, to me, a blessed assurance that God will help me ‘wheel’ through the same valley and come out all the better for it.

One more thing.  It’s been so great having my sister Kathy stay with Ken and me. The last month has been such a blessing as she has helped with my medical needs, assisted with meals and house chores, and given Ken much-needed breaks (he says she’s been a God-send). Every night Kathy and I have enjoyed reminiscing over childhood days. I know the fiercest, most difficult part of my battle against this cancer is looming on the horizon; but for now, God is replenishing our souls with plenty of rest and sweet, family refreshment. So thank you for your prayers – believe me, I’ve been feeling the impact of all the intercession. I’ve even been able to keep up a pretty regular schedule at the office of Joni and Friends. God is enabling me to go “from strength to strength,” just as it says in Psalm 84. Although a lot lies ahead in my battle against this cancer, the Lord has promised to be with me every step of the way. And because I am not afraid, I know He is working through your prayers — I’m so grateful for your help and encouragement on this journey! And don’t forget to visit Joni’s Corner for all the updates.

Pray for Kim Hopper

Kim Hopper (of the Hoppers), who underwent complete hysterectomy surgery last Thursday, has been re-hospitalized at Women’s Hospital in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Kim had been released from the hospital Friday, but during the weekend she began experiencing abdominal pain and nausea. Doctors have determined that the singer has a lower abdominal blockage, and they are trying to clear that with medication in the hopes of avoiding additional surgery.

Kim and Dean both need your prayers during this time.

Update from Joni

“I just received a call from my doctor telling me that the results of the PET scan and bone scan are clear — in other words, they did not find any cancer that had metasticized in my bones or elsewhere! THANK YOU for praying — I’m convinced this good news is a result of your personal and powerful intercessions. As far as I know, I will still have to go through chemotherapy starting the first week of August, but if there’s any change on that front, I’ll be certain to let you know ASAP. Psalm 61:1 says, “Hear my cry, O God; listen to my prayer.” And you know what? He did!”

Doug Oldham Passes Away

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Dove Award-winning gospel singing veteran Doug Oldham passed away on July 21 at a Charlottesville, Va., hospital awaiting surgery for a back injury sustained about a week ago. He had been in declining health in recent years. He was 79 years old.

With a music career that spanned more than 50 years, Oldham may have been best known for his weekly appearances with the late Rev. Jerry Falwell on The Old Time Gospel Hour television program that began in the early ‘70s and continued much of his career.

Falwell once wrote, “He has sung for presidents and royalty. Doug Oldham is as fine a singer as there is and he is a master communicator. But the important thing to me is that he has remained true to his Lord and his calling.”

Oldham began singing in the early ‘60s at tent revival meetings where his father preached. He soon met a young songwriter named Bill Gaither and they began to travel on weekends with Gaither playing the piano and Oldham singing the songs Gaither and his wife Gloria were writing.

According to the Gospel Music Association, Oldham was the first person to ever sing and record “He Touched Me,” one of the most famous songs ever written by Gaither—a song later recorded by Elvis Presley.

In 2006, Oldham was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame.

In a 2007 interview with the Liberty Journal, Bill Gaither said, “Not all awards are historic, but I think that particular one was because of the major contribution he made. It was a very deserving moment.”

Gaither called his friend a “unique communicator, with a great heart.”

“People liked him because he sang with such feeling,” Gaither said. “His spirit in spite of his bad health is amazing to me. The optimism I hear in his voice in spite of the fact I know he has endured a lot of pain with his back is amazing.”

Over the course of his five-decade career, Oldham recorded more than 65 albums and performed for former presidents Dwight Eisenhower, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, and George Bush, Sr.

Oldham was known around the world, with fans from Canada to Holland, where he was at one time No. 1 in gospel music, to all across England, where he sang for the queen.

In 2007, Liberty University named a recital hall after him and set up a scholarship fund in his honor at the Center for Worship.

Oldham and his wife of nearly 60 years Laura Lee lived in Lynchburg, Va.

Many of Oldham’s original recordings have been digitally remastered and are available on CD at http://www.dougoldham.com.

Visitation will be held on Sunday evening, July 25, at 7:00 p.m. at Pate Chapel, which is located on the campus of Thomas Road Baptist Church.

The funeral service honoring Doug’s life will be held on Monday, July 26, at 3:00 p.m. at Thomas Road Baptist Church.
